How To Put A Facebook Like Box Widget On Your Website

There are now many companies and brands that have implemented Facebook like box widgets for their respective websites. A Facebook like box is an excellent way to brand your business online because there are several ways for it to be found in search engines as well as on Facebook’s own search engine and search features. A Facebook like box widget is a social plugin that enables Facebook page owners the ability to gain likes from their own website.
The reason that this is a good look for website owners is because of the power of social media. When a given user visits a website equipped with a Facebook like button, they are able to see which of their Facebook friends liked the page as well. This plays in to give the website in question notoriety. A website visitor is also able to read recent updates inside of the widget and like the page with one click of the mouse button…without having to visit the page on Facebook. This capability adds to website retention.
I get the question on how to place a Facebook like box widget on to one’s own website. A lot of people are learning that more fans on Facebook ads up to more notoriety for one’s brand name. To satisfy the need to learn how to do this, once and for all, I’ve outline an easy step-by-step guide on how to place a FaceBook like box widget on your website:
1. Create a Facebook Fan Page
Everyone has got to start somewhere right (smile)? Log in to your primary Facebook Account and go to the following link: http://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php?campaign_id=372931622610&placement=pghm&extra_1=0
From there, make the best choice for the type of fan page you’d like to create (local business, artist or brand). The wizard will guide you through the rest of the process.
2. Edit Your Fan Page
Click on the “edit” link underneath your fan page profile pictures. This will then take you to advanced editing features for your fan page.
From there click on the tab marked “marketing” and you will then see a list of options. Click on the link titled “add a like box to your website”.
You will then be taken to the main like box editor where you will be able to design your page’s like box to the desired specification. The direct link can be found at: http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like-box?profile_id=214411253428
One thing you will definitely need to input in the edit interface is your page’s specific URL (i.e. full website address). After this you can edit the widget width, color scheme and brightness settings as necessary. If you you’re putting this like box widget on a blog, you’re able to edit the like box settings to show your blog stream, or latest posts. At the very bottom of the editing interface is a button that says “get code”. Once you are satisfied with the look and feel of your Facebook like box, click this button to receive the code.
Once you have your pages code, there are several ways to go about placing this on your website. For blogs running WordPress there is a sidebar widget editor you can place the code inside of. If you’re building a site from scratch or outsourcing this, you’d need to give the code to your website development team. In a perfect world, they should know where to properly place this code (smile).
I hope that this tutorial demystifies the process for you. If you have any questions or comments on this post, please feel free to share your thoughts.
To your success,
Eric Nathaniel Jones
